dlawTtJeV JOHS W. niDKBICX. AfAQj of our people will remember John W. Frederick, for many jean an extentiTe manufacturer of carriages here. He built the building on the hill on Main Street, now occupied bj air.

Hanlon, Mr. Grote and others, the building in which the sanitary fair was held, afterwards used aa an armory, etc He resided at one time on tbe corner of South Clinton and Church Streets. A copy of the lforsTla Valley Begbter of June 14, before us, ontains the newa of his death at that place on Jnne 12. Mr. Frederick hss lived in Moravia for the past fifteen years.

He was ill for a long time, finally resulting in a paralytic stroke. He leaves a widow, one son and one daughter. MBS. ASSA MARIA FACST. Mrs.

Faust, mother of Dr. John Faust, and of Otto and Tobias Faost and Mrs. Ebling, ot this city, died at her home in Union Street on Friday, aged ninety years, until a week ago tbe was tn le markably good healib, and waa able to do some work even to the day ot her death. Every day for the past eight years at least. Mrs.

Faust has read from four to eight chapters of the Bible, and she had a remarkable memory for Script ture quotations. She was born in Ger many, and her maiden name was Anna MaiiaYaubeL She waa left a widow with seven children in 1851, and in 1861 came, to this country, where ber youngest sen entitled at once in the Union Army. Besides her children living here, Frederick Jnatus, Mrs. Faginer and Mrs. Schustler live in 'kantas City.

There are thirtj sn grandchildren and great grandchildren living. Sonant astjlen Wheel. Detective J. F. Farbey, who is employed by the Pope Manufacturing Company, was in this city Friday looking for a stolen bicycle.

The wheel was a new model Columbia and attached to it was a handsome lamp. It was stolen from the Metropolitan Bicjcle Company, Boulevard and lSlh Street, New Yuik: Detective Farbey traced the wheel aa far as this city, and while on his way up Main Street, he saw tbe wheel in front ot Alderman Zihn's store. He enquired aa to bow Zahn came into possession of the wheel, and the latter said he bought it from a man for $20. Mr. Farbey procured the wheel and took it to New York with him on the next train.

OORMYOHKLKTO Summer Sayings. Alrv Tnlry Lillian Acvollna: a Tr Kondala Aaala The Jforrla Snopard Uarrlace The Sew Ctvll Right Law. New York. June 28. Fair LHJlan Russell has taken to the wheel, and of course nearly all of the papers have made mention of this fact.

Well, cycling In these like taking to drink, for having once put the hand to the bar there Is no go ing back, the craxe seises one. and nothing less than a broken leg acts as the bikes keely. cure. Miss Russell. It Is announced, will carry her objection to to.

well, tights Into this new pastime, and wear a skirt Instead' of knlcker i bockera when she haa learned the gentle I art ot riding What her costume is to be no mab can tell, but that It must be something very chic and becoming to her avoirdupois goes without saying. The Kendals are coming again to us. Really tbe Kendals will not be unlike the "Campbells" who have been "coming" for many years. But the announcement that Air. and Mrs.

Kendal will return to this country In the autumn la not unexpected. Every one knew that Willie and Madge couldn't stay away from their "dear America" while there waa a shade of a "draw" left. They have apparently discovered that London theatricals are at lowwater mark, and fear to be left high and dry there next winter. Is also his Intention to establish a great I hospital, which will be entirely free to the poor. Aa the young Mrs.

Morris Is greatly Interested In charities It looks aa though the match will prove a bless ing to New York poor. Attention Is called to the fact that under the new civil rights law a colored man now possesses an advantage over his white brother. Any negro can go Into a restaurant, hotel or theater In this city, and If he la put out or Is not served he haa a case for damage. But a white man who does not look reputable can be put out and nothing can be done. A white man who looks untidy'and is not well clad la not permitted to seat him self in a swell restaurant and dine.

He Is courteously, and if necessary, shown the way out. The restaurant keeper knowa that the presence of a dis reputsble looklng white man would be objectionable to hla patrons. At last the colored man's star Is In. the ascendant in this state. JOHNSTON.

Temperanoe Meeting. In tbe courthouse Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The public, is cordially ln vied to The boat houses recently occupied by the Pennsylvania and Columbia orewa have been torn down. The number of beggers In the streets seems to be Increasing, and It Is now al most Impossible to stand on a corner down town waiting to catch a cable car without being accosted by a whine for aid to get home. The bridge route to far away Brooklyn, and the ferries leading to the same cold and distant place are Infected with these mendicants who are "working" the latest racket In the begging line, which Is the great needf of a nickel or so to get home.

If the broken one Is" a man he says he Is very 'lame and Invites your attention to a miserable foot In evidence. If a woman, she tells a tale of having lost her change and must walk unless some one will help with a few cents; orlt is a ragged urchin with a grimy face, whose eyes fasten on his victim with such pleading that is seems Inhuman to deny him "a few cents for: somethin ter eate." I happened to hear the following conversation between two future aldermen! a day or so ago near one of the Jersey ferries: "Say Jeemle wheredid yer git de nick A bright eyed, dirty faced. barefooted lad of about twelve answered thusly: "Oh, I cort a old sucker and de bloke gin It to me." A few moments before this conversation "Jeemle" had no doubt been a picture of despair aa he begged for a penny or two from some kind hearted philanthropist. Oh general principles It Is a very wise Idea to re fuse all beggers, but then It certainly rather hard when they not only say they are hungry, but look It. "Social lubricators" are the la teat addition to the bread winning sisterhood.

A social lubricator Is given her board and living by'the summer hotel people. where she devises amusement for the otherwise dull company. Another novel means of earning a summer, living Is standing tn with the bicycle makers, who give a good rider a wheel, which she uses to advantage in lessons, to the summer boarders at a popular resort. A clever little actress, who Is quite well known to the theater going public, la said to square up her board bill by ar ranging charades and theatricals at a popular summer resort. Well surely no one will begrudge her this hard earned summer outing.

Prize stories. We have spoken from time to time of a series of prises to be awarded for the stories. The prizes were offered by the Bacheller syndicate, of which the Eagle lis a member. Por4he best story a prise of $2,000 waa awarded, and smaller sums for second, third and ao'oif. The prizes have been awarded.

The stories submitted came from ell parts of the earth, and were over three thousand in number. The first prize' waa awarded "to Hiss Mary E. Wllklns, the second to Prof. Brander Matthews, and so on. We do not mean to tell all about.lt here; on the tenth page of this paper will be found full story of the competition, and the method by which the prizes were awarded.

Our readers will find It In teresting, not only as showing the care taken to get the best story, selected, but that no knowledge of the writers should be known to the judges. 'Perhaps some Of the readers ot the Eagle sent In stories; When the stories come to be printed, aa they will soon, we can all read them, and judge for" ourselves which Is the best, ard thus In a degree see wheth er our judgment Is of value on matter. Tr dbmtayH "iiv The marriage of Mr. Morris to Xll.t Shepard. last week, has created tremendous amount of talk all over the town. The quiet wedding of Miss Shepard In comparison to that of her cousin. Miss Sloane, waa Indeed a great con trast, but as both girls have the man of their choice what's the difference They say the reason why Alice Vanderbllt Shepard Morris's mamma objected to the Morris alliance was because the young man's money was made In' the lottery business.
