AOTSSnSEMINT. er Shnuld Read the Following Edito rial From (be News Press of January 24: The special election to decide whether this city shall hare a paid Are department or shall continue the volunteer organization will take place on rcbruary 6. It would be Idle to deny that this question, one of the most mportant tnat has come up for years, has divided the town Into two fac tions and that the feeling between them runs high. On the one side arc the firemen, a compact organization with their adherents; on the other, the buslnes men, manufacturers and many city and county officials, who are convinced that the time haa come for a radical departure In fire flght ing methods In this city. Between the two Is the mass of voters whose will shall turn the scale one way or the other.

Hitherto the News Press has remained silent on this question, not In the sense of merely gauging public opinion, but In weighing the subject arerully before announcing what it believes the right moe for the citizens of Poughkeepsle to make. The News Press believes that THE TIME HAS COME FOR A PAID FIRE DEPARTMENT: THAT THE TIME HAS ARRIVED FOR THE OLD ORGANIZATIONS TO STEP BACK AND GIVE PLACE TO A NEW OR GANIZATION OF PAID HEN, TRAINED UNDER MODERN AND SCIENTIFIC METHODS TO FIGHT FIRES AND GIVE THEIR ENTIRE TIME AND ATTENTION TO THE WORK AT HAND. This statement is made ith no feeling of criticism or belitiiement of the present volunteer organizations which have long served I'oughkeepBle and whose sen Ices, It Is only fair and Just to say, have been appreciated by all classes of citizens. Ilut the time has come for a change of methods a change, briefly 4caklng. which but predicates the spirit of progress, and a change which many thoughtful people believe to be necessary In many respects for the uture welfare of this city.

At to expense. It Is conceded without argument that a paid department will cost more than at present. It Is reaaonable to suppose that this excess will sooner or later be more than justified In added efficiency of sen Ice wherein enters less damage to property when professional firemen undertake the task. At any rate such Is the weight of argument here other cities have made the change, the results bearing out the contention. It Is, moreover, a fair assumption that a city with a paid department will receive more consideration from the fire Insurance companies than It would with volunteers In command and that the fire underwriters In their Inspections would discover less cause for criticisms In their periodic Inspections.

There Is another point worth considering. Poughkeepsle Is a growing town. It Is known throughout the land as an educational city. It Is Aioreoer acquirrng the added of a manufacturing Its hamber of Commerce Is tireless of "endeavor to attract factories and cth enterprises. It baa brought manyconcerns here and Its efforts will bring more.

Fire protection to these prospective locators Is of prime Importance. They wish to be sure that they will be adequately protected In nia respect, and IT DOES NOT TAKE A VERT BRIGHT MIND' TO COMPREHEND. THAT WHETHER JUSTIFIED OR NOT. THE FACT OF A PAID DEPARTMENT IN A CITY. IS IN ITSELF A STRONGER ARGUMENT AT HAND AND A CREATOR OF DEEPER CONFIDENCE IN THE ND OF THE INDIVIDUAL OR CORPORATION WHO HAS" IN MIND THE ACQUISITION OF A NEW LOCATION FOR BUSINESS.

Tbla reason is in itself.tmportant for It la just such a point as this that often weighs In he balance as to whether a new enterprise might come here or go to a town where it feels It would have better and safer fire protection. There a no sentiment In the business man and as a rule he may be depended upon to weigh every point and take the highest average. We hope that the citizens of tills town will see their way clear to vote for a paid department. And to the Dretnen, the News Press wishes to say, in friendly spirit, to cast aside sentiment and selfishness in the matter and consider only the future welfare and betterment of Poughkeepsle. A paid fire department la bound to come; If not through this election, at some future time, and that la not far off.
