DECEMBER 23, 1932 THE POUGHKEEPSIE EAGLE-NEWS FIVE JEWS PLANNING FOR CHANUKKAH Eight Day Festival to Open Tonight with Services At Synagogues Sabbath eve services at local synagogues tonight. will mark the opening of the eight day festival of Chanukkh, Feast. the. Dedication, one of the most Joyous of the minor holidays of the Jewish calendar. The holiday is and observed in Jewish homes and also A known as the Feast of Lights, in the synagogue wtth the lighting of candles.

One candle is lit the first day, two the second day, on and so on until eight are kindled the last. day of the feast. The festival commemorates the defeat of the Syrians by the Jews in 165 B. and the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem to the service of God after it had remained defiled for exactly three years. The festival lasts for eight, days in accordance with an old legend which states that a single cruse of undefled oil found in the Temple at the time of the rededication burned for eight days through the miraculous intervention of God.

In modern times the festival has assumed the character of a children's celebration, a period of great joy, marked by the playing of games and the recounting of the great deeds of the Jewish heroes and martyrs of the past. Hoffman, of 392 Mill street, city sealer of weights and measures, was received yesterday by Mr.

Hoffman from Charles Reynolds, director, of the bureau of weights and measures. of the state department of agriculture and markets. Mr. Reynolds declared that the efforts of Mr. Hoffman aided in making the work of the bureau -success and said that "It has always been a great pleasure to work with you in protecting the Interest of the public." Mr.

Reynolds, in his letter, said also that "the report of our inspector who investigated your locality confirms my belief that I am receiving hearty support from you." MRS. MENNONNA DIES AT PIZZUTO RESIDENCE Mrs. Raffaela Mennonna, 72, died yesterday morning at the home of Benjamin Pizzuto, 102 Gafden street, where had lived for number of years. The funeral will be held from the funeral parlors of John V. Mellady, 280 Mill street, at 8:30 o'clock this morning and at 9 o'clock from Our Lady of Mount Carmel church where a mass of requiem will be celebrated.
