City Manager Donald J. O'Hara said SO arrests were made on 70 charges ranging from assault and prostitution to loitering. Additionally, a step up in ticketing was reported for traffic violations.

The statistics are encouraging, of course, because it is evidence that, at long last, somebody is paying attention to what goes on in the central city, particularly after nightfall. It may have come as a shock to some good citizens to learn that there are. prostitutes and hooligans afoot in their city, but the education should be worth the trauma From all indications, the police action on the long weekend was not indiscriminate. One. of the real dangers of "crack downs" such as this is that over enthusiasticenthusiastic enforcement can lead to the abuse of police power which School Buses If anyone was not aware that schools are open, the proliferation of those yellow school buses in area highways mornings and afternoons would be sufficiently informative.

The absence of them on the roads during the summer vacation served to dull the memory of how many there are, and the fact that their flashing red stop signals did not interfere with the free flow of traffic was a pleasant relief for motorists. But they're back now, and every driver should be aware of their presence and their mission. Each school bus carries a precious cargo and should be treated with the deference it deserves.lt is breaking the law to pass a school bus stopped on the. highway, and, if a given situation leaves room for doubt, to halt is the safest policy. The tragic train bus crash in the Rockland County community of Congers last spring exemplified most dramatically the chilling potential of transporting school childrert.

Lesser dangers are faced daily by the hundreds of bus drivers who must ply the area roads. All of which punctuates the special need for safety on the highways during the morning and evening hours, and extra special attention to school buses. Cecil D. Sherow Dutchess County in general and Pleasant Valley in particular have suffered a major loss with the death of Cecil D. Sherow.

A native and lifelong resident of Pleasant Valley, he was prominent in the agricultural community and donated many years of his life to public service. A measure of his standing in his hometown was the fact that he served as supervisor of Pleasant David Hendin: Valley for lust short of 24 years. Concurrently, he served as a volunteer fireman, was active in the Grange, and contributed his talents to various civic, social, and service organizations. Mr. Sherow symbolized the type of solid citizen who forms the foundation on which a community progresses' with" intelligence and responsibility.

He will be missed. What's New In A Holiday Thousands Of Years Old? "Who so Ri oudiy We Hail?" Everybody's Column can result in innocents getting swept up with the guilty. O'Hara made no bones about the objective of this tactical squad which is, as he put it, "clearing the streets of drifters, disorderly persons and so forth. are making those streets unsafe for the public." We consider this a requisite preliminary if the much heralded revi talization of the Main Street business district is ever to be realized. We can expect new Police Chief James Callahan, who takes office officially today, to sustain the work of this tactical squad since he was in on the planning stage originally.

We say go to it. This tactical squad concept seems such a good idea that it makes you wonder why it hasn't been tried before. But before we get into that score, fellow citizens, be thankful for small favors.
