II 84 fOBQhkeapsU Journal Thursday, December 5, 196 Westchester Nips Dutchess, 88 86; 1 Kingston Shades Lourdes; Marist Wins Falcons' Surge Fails By JEFF MORTIMER Dutchess Community College went from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again but it was Westchester, and the ridiculous, which eventually won the Mid Hudson Conference basketball game at Falcon Hall Wednesday night The visitors went home with an 88 86 victory, their third without a loss the young season, but they must have been a confused bunch by the time it was over. Seldom has a team looked as rood and as bad In one came as the Falcons did Wednesday night They led for the first 12 minutes, fell behind by 24 with 12 minutes to play, then rallied to close the gap to two before time ran out on them. "We're going to get better," said new coach El Evans, "if only I can get them to hustle." The Falcons hustled until they had a small but stable lead, then saw Westchester reel off 10 straight points to go ahead 38 29 eight minutes before nail time and 54 37 at intermission. Dutchess tried a zone press to start the second half and it was ineffective. Finally, Evans tried a man to man press and good things began to happen.

"That brought their big men away from the basket and gave us a chance to get In," said Evans. The score at the time was 68 44, Westchester. Royce, Lawrence Lead The surge was led by the backcourt team of Tom ROyce and Richie Lawrence. Royce finished with a game high 37 points, including 13 of 16 at the foul line. Lawrence scored IS but his ball hawking helped rattle the visitors.

Ron Brala, Steve Washington and Earl Anderson were the heroes for Westchester. Brala scored 29 points, most of them on a deadly jumper, and Washington stuffed in 28, primarily from the inside. Anderson didn't do much scoring but the lean graceful center hauled in the bulk of the winners rebounds It was Jim Shelton's only point of the game that broke the Falcons' back, however. Dutchess had closed the gap to 87 84 with 36 seconds remaining when Roy McAteer fouled Shel ton. He made the first on a one and one situation and missed the second but Westchester's Roger Howard picked off tne rebound.

The winners began to kill the clock and McAteer again com' mitted a foul, this time against Steve Oliver. Oliver missed his shot and Dutchess got the ball but Lee McKlnney's bucket with two seconds left only made the final score close. Royce showed proficiency at drawing fouls and a number of his points came on three point piays. his outside snooting was off but he kept driving relentlessly for the basket and it usually paid off. went completely away from the of fense I had planned." said Evans.

"I'm beginning to think we're a better club when we run.
