Birthday Remembrance JEAN SPAGNUOLA In our hearts your memory lingers, sweetly tender, fond and true, There is not a day, dear mother, That we do not think of you. Love, Your Only Daughters Carmella, Frances Jean Alexander Karpilov EAST FISHKILL Alexander Karpilov, formerly from Woodside, Queens, and recently of Hopewell Junction, NY, passed away on January 22, 2006 after a long illness. He was 74.

The family is grateful for the care he received while Wingate at St. Francis Beacon in the Vent Unit. Alex Karpilov is survived by his daughters, Stazia Wermuth, of Hopewell Junction, and Alexia Karpilov, of Rochester, NY; his grandsons Max and Nicholas Wermuth; and his sonin-law, Robert Wermuth Jr. Born in 1931, he was raised in Queens by Anastasia and Ignatz Karpilo, with his two brothers, Fred and Walter. As a child and young adult, Alex was an accomplished and avid traditional Russian dancer, and toured the East Coast performing with his dance troupe.

After serving in the Army, Alex studied art and painting at Cooper Union. He was an active. member of the Greenwich Village Garde community in the 1950's, before graduating in 1958 and pursuing a career in design. He married Anne Michel in 1961, with whom he had two daughters and lived with until her death in 1993. He pursued a successful career as an exhibit designer, and also enjoyed creating art for his friends, family, and own sanity.

An accomplished painter and calligrapher, he created beautiful watercolors, oils, and calligraphy pieces. Testifying to his ability, Alex had calligraphic interpretation of "Aesop's Fables" displayed at the Cooper Smithsonian Institution in NYC in the 1970's. But perhaps he will be best remembered for his folk-art inspired drawings of Russian village celebrations, which hang on the walls of many friend's homes. Alex was always known for his irreverent, if somewhat biting wit: he was famous for coming up with oneliners at exactly the right, if not politically correct, moment. As soon as friends saw that twinkle in his babyblue eyes, they knew the evening was off to the races.

He never lost his love of dancing, and kept his sense of humor until the very end. Alex was proud of his daughters but his sun rose and set on grandsons, Max and Nick. He delighted in teaching them how to draw, and would glow with "Grandpa Pride" in their presence. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5-8pm and Saturday from 1011am at the McHoul Funeral Home, 895 Route 82, Hopewell Jct. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11am at the funeral home with Father Alex Vinogradov officiating.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the Cooper Union Annual Fund, 30 Cooper Square, 8th Floor, NY, NY 10003. Alex was a proud alumnus of Copper Union and took much pride in the school. For driving directions or to send the family an online condolence, please visit www.mchoulfuneralhome.com. Last child of country music founders dies KINGSPORT, Tenn. Janette Carter, 82, the last surviving child of country music's founding Carter Family, died Sunday.

Carter was the daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter. Her parents and her father's sister-in-law Maybelle Carter formed a singing trio discovered in 1927 when talent scout Ralph Peer came through the Tennessee-Virginia border town of Bristol to record mountain music. When her brother Joe died in March, Janette Carter became the last surviving child of the original group's members. The best known of her generation to present-day listeners was country star June Carter Cash, a daughter of Maybelle and wife of Johnny Cash.

Carter Cash died in May 2003 at 73. Her husband died later that year. Following the death of her father in 1960, Janette Carter dedicated her life to preserving not only the Carter Family music, but the folk and country music of Appalachia. One result of that effort was establishment of the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Va. In September, Carter was given the Bess Lomax Hawes award by the National Endowment for the Arts for her effort to preserve and perform Appalachian music.
