School seeks cash to build playground By Bond Brungard For the Poughkeepsie Journal FISHKILL The playground is long gone but that doesn't mean they didn't have fun Sunday at Brinckerhoff Elementary School. The playground was removed because the wooden structure was splintering and disintegrating.

Children played musical chairs on its former graveled home to raise money for new playground equipment made from recycled aluminum and plastic. "We thinks it's going to be the world's largest game of musical chairs," said Jerry Husted, the school principal. Husted did not alert the Guinness Book of World Records to verify his claim, but the event was expected to raise about $7,000 toward the cost of the $83,000 playground. Chairs were sold for $10 a piece, giving participants a chance to move clockwise through the elongated rectangle course and compete for an open chair when the music stopped. The playground was constructed in the 1980s, but weather and more stringent safety standards brought down the once proud community built project.

"It met 1980s standards," Husted said, "not 2000 standards." Wappingers district chips In Construction of a new playground will not rely solely on a game of musical chairs and other small fund raisers. The Wap 'We think it's going to be the world's largest game of musical Jerry Husted principal Brinckerhofl Elementary School on the game played at the fund raiser pingers Central School District has helped with $8,000. and the Town of Fishkill has donated an equal amount. "We knew we weren't going to make it with bake sales," town council member Dennis Zack said. The new playground will include the usual accoutrements for daily recess periods such as swings, slides and an obstacle course.

It will also be handicappedhandicapped accessible, and that part, which will be accessible to everyone, is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The remaining sections of the playground are expected to be finished some time next year. There has been design input from many people, including a student committee. Elias Wynshaw, a fourth said the new playground will include everything desired by students who wanted a totally integrated complex of components and those who wanted separate components. "This way everybody will be happy," he said.

Frank Giusto said he's going to organize a dart tournament in June to raise money for the new complex. "My daughter played here," he said. The Associated Press Director's guild former chief dies LAS VEGAS George Sidney, who directed dozens of musicals when the genre was at its peak and presided over Hollywood's directors guild for 16 years, died Sunday. He was 85. Sidney died at home of complications of lymphoma, his wife Corinne Sidney said.

A one time child actor whose career took him from the vaudeville stage to decades of success in the studio system, Sidney directed a string of hits for MGM in the 1940s and 1950s, including "Ziegfeld Follies" (1946), "Annie Get Your Gun" (1950), "Show Boat" (1951) and "Kiss Me Kate" (1953). He worked with such show business greats as Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Tony Curtis, Lana Turner, Dick Van Dyke and Ann Margret, and once defined a star as "someone who attracts your attention even when he or she isn't doing anything." Sidney was president of the Screen Directors Guild in 1960, when it merged with the Radio and Television Directors Guild to form the Directors Guild of America He spent 16 years at the head of the organization and was the first recipient of its president award in 1998. "The Directors Guild is extremely saddened by the passing of our former president, George Sidney," DGA president Martha Coolidge wrote in a statement. In a 1998 interview with the Associated Press, Sidney discussed the decline of the genre he loved. "Musicals became too expensive," he said.

"When we were working at MGM, there was a whole company of talent: stars, directors, choreographers, song writers, con ductors, arrangers. All worked under contract at regular salaries. To gather people like that today would be enormously costly." The Associated Press 1. Hikt IHI FMjm fl Wm. G.
