"That is certainly a criteria when it comes to a subject," Kasterine said. 'They've got to be somebody, some shape or subject that landed on you." That's the feeling Kasterine would like for his students as well, when he conducts upcoming summer photography workshops in Garrison. Classes for beginners start June 8 from 2 to 5 p.m.

and June 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. for advanced students. Kasterine will instruct beginners on becoming familiar with using a camera. Being comfortable with the camera will allow students to pay more attention to taking photographs and selecting subjects. Advance workshops are geared "to help people look acutely at the world and to record the expression, form and surroundings of the subject that they choose." Knowing what works Kasterine has been a photographer for some 41 years and has been teaching an independent course at Vas time what distinguishes a good from a bad photograph is whether or not it appeals to everybody.

"It's more than a snapshot, which is usually a photograph of somebody who appeals in some way to the photographer emotionally," Kasterine says. "The subject has to be someone, somewhere unusual, something you haven't seen before." You know the kind the photos in most galleries and photo albums of vacation spots, sporting events, friends, family gatherings and landscapes. Kasterine said the work of photographer Nan Goldin was centered around her friends during the 1970s' and '80s' sex, drug and rock era 'The subject has to be someone, somewhere unusual, something you haven't seen Dmitri Kasterine photographer She literally focused on friends in Manhattan's East Village. They held no significance whatsoever to anyone who didn't know them, explained Kasterine, but somehow they were thrilling and intriguing enough to be published in her first book, "The Ballad of Sexual Take a look at the world around you this summer. All you'll need is a camera and some film and you never know what may develop.

Arlo Guthrie at West Point By Rebecca Rothbaum Poughkeepsie Journal With his 1967 album "Alice's Restaurant," Arlo Guthrie became a poster boy for the 1960s counterculture movement and a leading voice in a new generation of folk musicians. Today Guthrie is still performing, creating symphonic arrangements of his own songs and other American classics for orchestras across the country. Saturday evening he comes to Eisenhower Hall Theater at West Point. The Ulster County based Vanaver Caravan will share the bill, appropriately performing a tribute in music and dance to Arlo Guthrie's folk legend father Woody Guthrie, "Pastures of Plenty" Guthrie, who was recording this week and so could not be reached for an interview, will perform some of his best known songs, such as "Alice's Restaurant," "Darkest Hour" and "Doors of Heaven," as well as Huddy Led better's "Midnight Special," Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," and Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." Howland show opens Saturday By Nicole Edwards Poughkeepsie Journal When Fred Douglass de Mayo stopped by an art class at Private Studio in Woodstock, run by his friend Gustav Pirrung, he developed interest in an artform beyond dance.

"They looked like they were having such a good time," said de Mayo, who's performed with such dance troupes as the National Ballet Company and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet "It was a nice atmosphere and I felt like I belonged." That was 10 years ago. Soon after, de Mayo began studying at the Woodstock School of Art, exhibiting his paintings in galleries. He is among nine artists showcasing their work in "A Fine Arts Blending" at The Howland Cultural Center in Beacon through June 16. There will be a reception to meet the artists and view the paintings, photographs and sculptures on Saturday from 3 to 5 m. "When I saw their work, it was lovely, and so selecting their work was easy," said Florence Northcutt, president of the board of directors.

She said several area residents brought the artists' work to her attention. Besides the series of sunrise and sunset oil paintings and icononographies de Mayo has on display are contemporary photographs by Todd Weissner and tiny giclee photos, done on a computer, by Eileen MacAvery Kane. One of Elisabeth Nick les' bronze sculptures depicts a Greek fable, while Tim Shannon's paintings take on three dimensional qualities. Unique pieces to see Thomas Moore's photographs zero in on celebrities and human figures, while shades of blue and red in Kate McHenry's paintings convey her subject's emotions.
