Trading was fairly active. Although the economic background continues to improve, brokers felt that concern over current developments in Vietnam probably will keep investors in a defensive mood. A 10 per cent gain in early February car sales combined with further signs of improving profits would normally provide incentives for a comeback.

But many analysts think the slide has still further to go. Shortly after the opening bell the United Press International stock market indicator tacked on 0.14 per cent with 352 issues crossing the tape. There were 135 advances and 119 declines. Burroughs picked up to 173 on a block of 2,300 shares. IBM tacked on 1 to 572 on 3,000 shares.

Chrysler dipped Xerox was a point sized gainer. Lockheed lost to on shares. General Motors was unchanged at 75 on 6,500 shares. Bethlehem Steel gave a fraction.
