Ills column on local media will appera periodically. If some of the voices do not sound familiar these days on Poughkeepsie radio station WEOK, and some of the familiar voices are gone, the changes In air personnel tell only half the story. The station is in the of the biggest overall personnel shakeup anyone can remejnber, frpm general manager to bookkeeper.

Station owner Robert Dyson, brother of State Commerce Commissioner John R. Dyson, has repeatedly refused to comment on the staff changes. "If you guys spend your time running around about this, you're barking up the wrong tree," Dyson told the Journal. "I have no comment on it. It's not news." Among the changes Lou Pells, who has been with the station 27 years and general manager for at least the last 10, was "reassigned" to head the company's Muzak division.

Pells was replaced as general manager by Richard Ferry, who lasted only a few weeks. Ferry has now been replaced by Dyson himself, who is "calling most of the shots." The Media By George Bernstein Ralph Arrigaie, a long time air personality and former program director who had recently been doubling as Salesman, has been named to the new post of "vice president and operations manager." Program Director Valerie Scheying and her well known, deep voiced husband Karl, a disc Jockey, were both fired without notice. Doth have been at the station for 18 years News Director Glenn V. Laxton, who had been with WEOK for more than eight years, was fired without explanation, Kathleen Bristol resigned from the news department, and Dill Dolan has been promoted to news director. "This is a business like any other," said Dyson.

"There are many reasons for the changes, none of which I am going to make public." Laxton charged the staff shakeup was an attempt by Dyson to break up the union, which is an affiliate of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) lie said the trouble began when he and other newsmen were ordered to perform tasks formerly TAKE THE SHORT WAY TO NEW YORK Short Line is the only sane way to get from your town to New York (Wc also go from towrt to town We pay the gas, tolls and parking fees and hassle with the traffic All you do is sit back and relax aboard our air conditioned rest room equipped buses You can beat the Short Line bus to New York Frequent daily departures from Poughkeepsio Fishkill and Rhinebeck Poughkeepsie Rhinebeck 454 6220. gsjBMpj I Goof Proof Charters too rely on Short Line for group travel anytime, anywhere. 800 631 8405 QfHOFrrLjNE OPEN Mon. "We did them, but I also told them it was a violation of our contract, ifind I reported it to AFTRA," he said.

"When I asked why I was being removed they (station management) said they were not af liberty to discuss it," said Laxton. ''We were given no explanation, no severance pay, and no notice." he added. Laxton, who recently won an award for the station, Is now managing editor of "Policeman's Voice," a weekly1 newspaper In New York City. Mrs. Scheying said she and her husband went on vacation lust before the shakeup, and they had been assured there would be Jobs for them when they returned.

"That was nice and reassuring," she said. "The day we came new manager called us into his office and said to me your position no longer exists," she said. Her husband, she said, was told there had been a "format change' She said he gave them both final paychecks no severance pay r'and we just got up and left. Eighteen years Mrs Scheying said there is speculation that Dyson Is trying to bring young blood into thef station Dyson is only around 30 himself and Is trying to cut overhead. "He has a great feeling for youth," she said.

WEOK, with 5,000 watts, has long been the most powerful AM station in the Poughkeepsie market, and for many years dominated the ratings. Dut sources at other stations say a recent Arbitron survey showed WEOK slipping in the local ratings, tied with the much smaller1 all news WHPN in Hyde Park. Arrigaie, however, denied that, pointing out that WHPN had paid (See Voices Page 21) flkJBBSksF PABST 24 12 oz. cans $499 CASE SCHWEPPES 10 N.R.
