OBITUARIES TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2009 POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL Marie E. Parker R. Willard Jones AMENIA, NY Marie E. Parker, 88, wife and business partner of the legendary horseman, Joseph E. Parker.

NY, died peacefully on Saturday, January 31,2009 at the Danbury Health Care Center in Danbury, CT. A longtime resident of Amenia, NY, Mrs. Parker was a therapy aide at Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, NY for 35 years retiring in 1987. In later years, she also served as an assistant town assessor for the Town of Amenia. Born March 22, 1920 in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late William and Dorothy Hicks Lockman.

On May 18, 1935 in Baltimore, MD, she married Joseph E. Parker, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Parker owned and operated Joe Parker Stables, established in 1960 in Amenia, NY, and won numerous world, national and regional awards for training and showing champion Morgan and American saddlebred horses.

Mr. Parker died on December 23, 1983. Mrs. Parker was a member of the American Saddlehorse Breeder's Association in Lexington, KY. A parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia, she was also a volunteer with the Vine and Branches Food Pantry.

The driving force behind her family's successful careers and business, Mrs. Parker was well thought of in her community and by her many friends. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothea Parker of Baltimore, MD and her five legendary horsemen sons, Joseph Parker, Jr. of Dover Plains, NY, William Parker of Canton, CT, Hugh Parker of Lakeville, CT, Leslie Parker of Amenia, NY and Bernard Parker of Amenia, NY; sixteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

James Robert Martens PATTERSON James Robert Martens, 84, a long-time resident of Patterson, NY, passed away at his home on January 30, 2009. Born in Yonkers, NY on October 2, 1924, he was the son of Dr. William Stanton Martens and Grace (Smith) Martens. He was a Sergeant in the US Army in World War II fighting in the Battle of the mechanic, Bulge.

Mr. Martens was a truck and operated a salvage business in Wingdale, NY for many years. He was a very talented musician, and was able to play many different instruments. In the 50's, he played with Dave Aken's band. He also made children's toys and furniture, which he would give to his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, Robert William Martens and his wife, Mary, of Germantown, NY, three grandchildren, William R. Martens and his wife, Melody, Melissa Challacomb and her husband, Eric, and Laurel Martens: a great granddaughter, Aryana Challacomb; two nephews, William and Robert Martens; and many good neighbors and friends. In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by his brother, Stanton Martens, and his former wife, Madolyn Marler. A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, February 5th at PM at Hillside Cemetery, Peekskill, NY, officiated by Pastor Jacob Dharmaraj of Shrub Oak. Born in Poughkeepsie on May 12, 1926, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James K. Wirehouse Sr. and was educated in the Red Hook School System.

On February 14, 1953 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, he married Anne D'aloia. Mrs. Wirehouse predeceased him on August 15, 2004. Mr. Wirehouse was a poultry farmer in Rhinebeck until he entered the service in 1943.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WW-II in the Pacific Theater and holds the Victory, Good Conduct, Occupation and American Defense Medals. He was honorably discharged in 1948. He then went to work for Delaval in Poughkeepsie, then worked as a cabinet maker for Hoes Cabinet Co. and retired from Dean Trucking Co. He was a talented artist and enjoyed drawing, painting and calligraphy.

James is survived by his son, James K. Wirehouse III and daughter in law Rebecca of LaGrangeville; his Alice Hicksey and Dottie Kilmer; sisters in law, Eleanor D'aloia and Sophie Ceron; and cousins Ron and Bobby Hicksey. Visitation will be Thursday 1-3 and 6-8pm at Parmele Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Father James Garisto Friday 11 am from St. Peter's Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, 185 Hudson View Poughkeepsie.

White, 73 years old, of LaGrangeville, died peacefully at Vassar Brothers Medical Center on Monday, February 2, 2009. He was born May 15, 1935 in Poughkeepsie and was the son of the late James A. and Lillian Collins White. Walter was a graduate of Arlington High School, Class of 1953 and had been captain of the Arlington High School Crew team in his senior year. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid fisherman.

He was employed by IBM in East Fishkill and Poughkeepsie as a manufacturing engineer for thirty-six years until his retirement. On June 27, 1954, he married Nancy A. White at the Arlington Reformed Church in Poughkeepsie. Nancy survives at home. Walter is also survived by his children, Walter E.

White, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Angier, NC; Kim Coneeny and her husband, Bruce, of Hopewell Junction; Kary Grimes and her husband, Daniel, of West Long Branch, NJ; and Kathy Daini and her husband, Al, of Ramsey, NJ; a brother, Clarence White and his wife, Ura of Wappingers Falls; thirteen grandchildren, Kara, Lauren Devin Coneeny, Danielle Wolfe and her husband, Eric, Courtney, Bryan, Patrick and Kyle Grimes, Christopher and Kevin Daini, Walter, III, Meaghan Zachary White: one daughter, Ella Wolfe and many nieces and nephews. Gaffney, 64, of the Town of Poughkeepsie, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital. Mr. Gaffney was a surgical technician for Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie up until retirement.

He was a United States Navy Veteran and a member of St. Peter's Church in Poughkeepsie. Born June 20, 1944, in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late William and Alice McKenna Gaffney. On Aug. 7, 1965 in Poughkeepsie, he married Mary Ann McKenna.

Mrs. Gaffney predeceased him on Aug. 11, 2000. Survivors include his two daughters, Alisyn Gaffney of Poughkeepsie; Eileen McDowell of Pleasant Valley; his son, Peter Gaffney of Providence Town, MA; two grandsons, Jonathan and Sean; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie. For directions, please visit our website at www.torsonememorial.com. Benson VanNess Dutcher, Jr. WINGDALE Benson VanNess Dutcher 73, of Wingdale and previously of Hyde Park, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2009 at St Francis Hospital.

Born February 21, 1935 in Hartford, CT, he was the late son of Benson V. and Rachel M. Mulkins Dutcher. Benson worked for the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office as a Sergeant in the Corrections Dept. for 27 years.

He was affectionately known as "Gentle Benson was an avid hunter and fisherman and belonged to the Millerton Gun Club. He was a stockcar driver and drove all over the county. He was a unique individual and will greatly be missed. Survivors include his sons, Brien Dutcher and his wife, Lisa, of Wingdale, Mark Dutcher and his wife, Andrea, of Wingdale; his daughter, Terry Williams and her husband, Robert, of Wingdale; grandchildren, Heather and R.P. Williams, Nicole Rivera, Dale Holbrook Brien Dutcher Amber Holbrook; greatgrandchildren, Mariah and Janise; his brothers Charles Dutcher of SC and Richard Dutcher of FL; several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

A long time resident of Highland, she was a member of St. James Church Milton and St. Augustine Church in Highland. She adored her cats and loved all animals. She was a kind spirited person who always thought of others and her family.

A Town of Poughkeepsie resident for two years, she resided previously in Port Pierce, FL. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in a Port Pierce, FL, where she was very active in her church. Marion loved playing cards and golfing. Born July 3, 1926 in Rhinebeck, NY, she was the daughter of Harold Stillwell and Dora Bell. On Apr.

26, 1991, she married Clemens Kramer, who predeceased her on Dec. 3, 2006. Survivors include two sons, James Dean, West Park, NY and Douglas P. Dean, Poughkeepsie, NY, one sister, Helen Lukens, Camden, SC; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a son, Mark Grey and a daughter, Robin Blake.

Peter Francis Varco Hyde Park R. Will Jones, 71, a Hyde Park resident since 1997 and previously of Millbrook and Queens, died Thursday, January 29,2009 at St.

Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie. Most recently, Mr. Jones worked for the New York Power Authority until his retirement. He previously worked as a security guard for Pinkerton's in New York City. Will was active with the Hyde Park Fire Department where he was an EMT with the Rescue Squad, member of the Fire Police, and was rently serving as President of the Fire Company since 2008.

He also was a former EMT with the Millbrook Fire Department, and was active with the Boy Scouts of America his whole life. Mr. Jones enjoyed singing and dancing and participated in community and summer stock theatre in the New York area. He was also involved in network television. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963.

Will served on the Vestry of St. James' for many years and was also a warden. In addition, he sang in the choir, and served as a lay reader, an acolyte, and a lay chaplain. He often united church and firehouse work by teaching children at the church's nursery school about fire safety. Shortly before his death, Will was awarded the St.

James' Medal for devoted service to the church. He was proud of having served in all these capacities not only at St. James', but also at Grace Church in Millbrook before moving to Hyde Park. Born in Chicago, IL on July 7, 1937, he was the son of the late Arthur R. and Viola M.

Ellis Jones. He received an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts from Wilson Junior College in Chicago. On November 19, 1966 in St. John's Methodist Church in Chicago, he married Janis Call. She predeceased him on July 31, 2005.

He is survived by a sister, Verla M. Blade of Roselle, IL and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Robert A. and Lawrence E. Jones.

There are no calling hours. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. A Memorial service will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, February 4,2009 at St. James' Episcopal Church, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

Burial of his ashes will take place in the family plot in Chapel Hill Gardens in Worth, Ill at a later date. Rose (Tirschwell) Britchky Jaffe KINGSTON Rose (Tirschwell) Britchky Jaffe, was born September 28, 1911 in Brooklyn, NY, where she lived for 64 years of her life, summering in Highland Mills, where husband, David Britchky owned Pine Grove Park Bungalow Colony. Dave died in 1975 and Rose moved to Lauderdale Lakes, Florida where she met and married Murray Jaffe, who died in 1992. In 2001 she moved to Manor at Woodside in Poughkeepsie and in 2006 she moved to Golden Hill Health Care Center in Kingston, NY. She is survived by her very loving daughter, Sondra (Sandi), sonlaw, Ralph Giordano, of Tillson, son, Malcolm, of Florida and stepgranddaughter Sharon WarantzSemel and Michael, of Middletown. She is also survived by grandchildren Lori Giordano, of Tillson, Daniel Giordano and wife Kim, of Seattle, Washington; Lisa Walker and husband, of Florida; great Alison Giordano; Joseph and Tori Walker and Freddi Semel.

Rose was a master knitter, crocheter, and bead worker. Her creations will provide lasting memories to all who have seen or are recipients of her handiworks. She was a life member of Hadassah and she held many leadership positions i in Women's Clubs and her condominium governance. Her zeal for life and energy level amazed all who knew her. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 4th, at the Keyser Funeral Service, 326 Albany Kingston, NY.

Burial will take place at the New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn, NY, at Wednesday. Shiva will be observed from 128PM, Thursday, 12-6PM Friday and Sunday at the Giordano residence, 8 North Road, Tillson, NY. Born June 6, 1926 in Mt. Kisco, NY son of Vincenzo and Anna Varco. After graduating from Mt. Kisco High School he served in the US Army during WWII from 1944-1946. After the war, he was a passionate mason building his own house as well as his children's homes and many local landmarks in Dutchess, Westchester, and Ulster Counties.

In his later years he spent his time filling the fridge with fresh fish and sauce. When he wasn't tending to his garden of over 400 tomato plants, you could find him making bread or "selling" his tomatoes at Mario's Brick Oven Bread. On April 18, 1954 he married Phyllis Rodee at St. Mary's Church in Canton, NY who survives at home. Peter is also survived by his loving family, Peter A.

and Janine Conti, Linda and her husband, Doc Halliday, Paul and Joan Madonna, David and his wife, Nadia, and Annette and Mike Gallo. His grandchildren Angela, Heather, Brandon, Peter John, Alysia, Christina, Luke, Zachary, Benjamin Varco, Monet and Norel Halliday, and Bryan Conti. His sister, Edith Rizzo, brother, Charles, and many nieces and nephews. Peter was predeceased by his brother, Louis in 2006. A lifelong area resident, she was employed as an assembler at Fargo Manufacturing retiring in 1996. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Poughkeepsie. She was a Life Member of the Family Ski Meisters and also bowled in several bowling leagues.

Born in Poughkeepsie on April 17, 1934, she was the daughter of Frank and Anna Morris LaBell. In 1956, Holy Trinity Church in Poughkeepsie, she married Donald Traver. Mr. Traver survives in Poughkeepsie. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Donald Traver of New York, NY; Thomas F.

Traver of Rochester; Wayne R. Traver of Santa Clara, CA; a grandson, Avery Traver of New York, NY, and three sisters, Marion Caswell of LaGrangeville; Evelyn LaBell of Kingston and Wendy Wright of Fairfax, VA. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph LaBell. Funeral services and burial are private and at the convenience of the family. Donations may be mad in her name to the Alzheimer's Association.

PLEASANT VALLEY Frank W. Hamer, 47, of Pleasant Valley and formerly of LaGrange and Cortlandt Manor, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at his home. Born in Yonkers on February 12, 1961, he was the son of Frank W. Hamer, Sr. and Helen S.

Girard Hamer. He was employed by Verizon in Poughkeepsie for many years. He enjoyed hot rods, drag racing and snowmobile racing and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Frank is survived by his mother, Helen Hamer, of Peekskill; his sisters, Leslie Smyth and her husband, John of Vernon, CT and Dianne See of NY, and three nephews, two nieces and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
